David Alan Walker

Emeritus Professor of Photosynthesis , in the University of Sheffield

In the UK, when university professors get beyond a certain age and usefulness they are put out to grass, like ageing horses. The term 'emeritus'; is a polite way of saying that they are past their sell-by date. So, when I can, I live here in Upper Coquetdale, overshadowed by the Harden Quarry

I live a precarious existence, pitched between NE65 7DT and S10 3RW. As I approach my 80th birthday my contacts with the Department of Animal & Plant Sciences and The Robert Hill Institute become increasingly tenuous but those with Hansatech Instruments,Oxygraphics and, more recently, with Peerless Publications are as strong as ever.

Turns Ashes--or it prospers; and anon,

Like Snow upon the Desert's dusty Face,

Lighting a little hour or two--is gone"
